Saturday 1st October –bike **** Lautrec to Castres on Voie Verte (Green road or’ rights of man’!) 26.9 miles, 17.35 knts – 4 hours 45 minutes out

A cloudy morning for a change! We got ready pretty quickly for us and set off on our bikes down the hill to find the Voie Verte cycle path into Castres. The path runs along a disused railway line all the way into the outskirts of town and felt very level until we were coming back when we realised how uphill the track actually went! We travelled through the farmland where they had recently harvested the pink garlic but couldn’t smell it when we past the drying barns! There were a few pigeonaires on the route, pigeon houses on stilts! We got to Castres and the brilliant path then gave way to absolutely nothing! No signs to the centre and no cycle track on the road. With no clues we ended up going away from the centre towards the station and further on into the commercial zone. Realising we were going wrong we turned round and eventually found the centre and were soon on the bridge over the river Agout. One of the things Castres is famous for are the small clapboard houses overhanging the river and they were reasonably attractive but looked neglected and empty. The worst thing was at the end of the row of houses and opposite the famous Bishops Palace housing the Goya museum was the most ugly tower block which looked semi derelict! It was the first thing we saw! Very disappointing :( We crossed back over the river on another bridge and were in the main square where a Saturday market was in full swing with the usual stalls and a lot of very unusual squash/pumpkins. We cycled around the streets but were disappointed with the overall neglected atmosphere and lack of anything remotely old! Albi was definitely more charismatic. We ate our lunch by the Goer museum and box knot garden before setting out to find our way back to the Voie Verte. The journey back as mentioned before was a bit of a challenging gradual incline the whole way and then the push up back to Lautrec just about finished us off! Nearly 27 miles and out over 4 hours. We decided to stay here tonight so had a relaxing afternoon reading in the sun which appeared again as soon as we got back :) We had a short walk up into the village tonight just to stretch our legs.
